Book Groups-September- Last Month for Book Groups
I am retiring from Mockingbird Books as of Sept 30th, 2014 thereby this is the last month for book groups at Mockingbird Books. I love helping book groups with their future selections and I am available for after school programs. You may ask for suggestions any time, I truly enjoy the challenge of finding the right book fit for each particular book group. You may reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org anytime. Girls Book Group (6-10 age) September
Every Third Wednesday of the month at 7pm
Our meeting is set for third Wednesday of the month, and we have first, second, and third grade readers attending this girls book group as of now. Each child will select a book according to their individual reading levels. Our current selections are the books:Suzanne Selfors's Imaginary Veterinary series (1-3 paperback now) bk # 4 The Order of the Unicorn out now in hardcover or Elephant & Piggie early reader books by Mo Willems.
Some of the older girls are reading the new series, Ever After High written by Shannon Hale or Wendy Mass's newest books The Last Present or Pie in the Sky which is in paperback now.
Its your choice of which book your child would like to read, as always! Please have your child bring in their current book they are reading and join us. Last year, we read the Daisy Dawson series, and the Magic Kitten/Magic Puppy series by Sue Bentley,and the Mercy Watson series by Kate DiCamillo and Bed & Biscuit series by Jean Carris.
Please feel free to bring in your favorite book to talk about even if its not our current selection. We love to hear about your favorite book at our book group meetings.

Graphic Novel Book Grp (6-10 age)Sept.
Every Second Friday of the month at 7 pm
Last month's meeting has come and gone.The Pizza was great ! This reading group has 6-9 boys so far, plus one girl (ages 6-10). We will read age approximate graphic novels and non graphic books too. We meet one evening each month, and we are set with the 2nd Friday of every month at the bookstore, Mockingbird Books.
Currently, this group selected Kazu Kibuishi's Amulet # 6 Escape From Lucien. Some of the children selected the graphic novel by local brothers, Chris A. & Kyle Bolton's SMASH-Trial by Fire out now. Or Raina Telgemeier's third book, Sisters! Out now on August 26th!
This past summer many children read the Olympians series by George O'Connor. These five books are brilliant and informative to even the most knowledgeable in Greek Mythology.His newest are Poseidon Earth Shaker and Aphrodite out now.
Some of children wanted to read Dave Roman's Astronaut Academy series which will have bk#2-Re-Entry out in May 2013. Some children choose new author and illustrator Michael Fry's Odd Squad- Bully Bait out now in hardcover only.It is the group's choice for August. There's a lot of adventure and humor for everyone.
Some children have chosen other graphic novels and others have chosen books: just bring in your current read. Its your child choice, just pick any book and join us in September. Free Pizza too!

Older Kids Graphic Novel Group (11-14 age) September (this group is evolving)
every third Friday of the month at 7 pm at Mockingbird Books
We have pizza with pepperoni delivered at 7pm for the fine young men (ages 11-14). EVERYONE THINKS better on a full stomach, served with water, and sometimes a veggie tray. We discuss the book, there's No pop quiz, so no worries. You must attend to have input into the next month's selection. Boys & Girls both welcomed.
I know Autumn is upon us and they picked the final book in The Magician Trilogy by Lev Grossman's Magician's Land! It is out Sept.2nd in hardcover only. Its the best fantasy trilogy if I 've read in the last 10 years and a great read for anyone who loves fantasy.

This group read the award winning author from Canada Kenneth Oppel, for April and especially loved his Airborn series.
February selections were Sons of Liberty series by A. Lagos & J. Lagos. Or Jane Yolen's graphic novels Foiled series, book 2 is Curses! Foiled Again. This group also chose Neil de Grasse Tyson's Space Chronicles, now in paperback.
Last August selection-The guys picked Adam Douglas' Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy for August. These books are wild humorous sci fi thrillers with British sensibilities.
Last summer some of the guys read Max Brooks' World War Z which the current movie about zombies is based.
Last year, this group chose Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. ( winner of the Hugo and Nebula book awards for this book). Its the first book of a 10 book series. I recommend this age group to read only Ender's Game, followed by Ender's Shadow ( book 5) in this series, followed by Ender in Exile:then wait 8-10 years to read the complete series of books. The movie, Ender's Game came out this late fall 2013, and the graphic novel version is available now too!
The summer before their choice was the 10th and final book in the Ranger's Apprentice series, Emperor of Nihon-Ja by John Flanagan. There is a new Ranger's Apprentice coming in August 2013, Hooray!!

Mother/Daughter Book Group 6th-8th graders who love YA Literature-September
every third Tuesday of the month at 7 pm at Mockingbird Books
We are evolving this autumn into a new format. Girls entering 6th, 7th or 8th grades and their mothers are welcome to talk and discuss YA literature with free pizza every third Tuesday at 7pm. September selection is Gayle Foreman's If I Stay. The movie version of this book is out August 22nd! We will discuss the movie and the book and differences between the two!
August 2014 choice was Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy series now complete. Book #1 Shadow & Bone, Book#2 Siege & Storm, and Book# 3 Ruin & Rising! It's a great choice! I love these books ! These books are on the Young Readers Choice Book List for 2015 just announced!
During April spring break there's a lot of testing going on the girls and chose a graphic novel, Delilah Kirk and the Turkish Lieutenant written and illustrated by Tony Cliff from FirstSecond Publishing.
March's selection was Andrew Smith's Grasshopper Jungle. This book is like the wildest,and most thrilling roller coaster ride of your life.Once you start you're not able or desire to get off until the ride ends or you read the last page of this unbelievable good novel for YA readers.
February 2014 selection is Libba Bray's new Diviners series. Diviners is now out in paperback with book 2 ( Lair of Dreams ) released in August 2014. She is the author of six wonderfully written YA books. Your YA reader will love her books if she doesn't already!
January 2014 selection was Veronica Roth's Divergent series and her newest book 3 Allegiant is out now! March 2014 is movie release of book one Divergent.
October selections were the books by new YA author Rainbow Rowell. If you have not discovered her novels yet,you are in for a wonderful read. I recommend Eleanor & Park or her newest, FanGirl. (Both powerful and very well written too!)
August 2013 selections are graphic novels: Lucy Knisley's Relish- My Life in the Kitchen or Jim Ottaviani's PRIMATES-Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey & Birute Galdikas.
December 2012 & January 2013 selections were the authors (Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl) of the Beautiful Creatures series which will have its first movie out in Feb. 2013. Their newest and final book is Beautiful Redemption available now in hardcover. The first book Beautiful Creature is in paperback.
Last June's selection was Oregon's favorite fantasy writer,Laini Taylor who's newest book, Daughter of Smoke & Bone is out in paperback June 6th. She is a National Book Award Finalist for Lips Touch-3 Times. In November, Taylor's second book, Days of Blood & Starlight which follows the Daughter of Smoke & Bone will be released in hardcover only. Taylor is a fantasy author not to be missed. She is enjoyed by young adults and grownups alike.
