Book Groups-February

Currently, at Mockingbird Books, I am the monitor of four monthly book groups. The first Friday of the month meeting time slot is not available at this time. I love helping book groups with their future selections. You may ask for suggestions any time, I truly enjoy the challenge of finding the right book fit for each particular book group. I welcome more book groups to the store. I will be at all of the book group meetings.

Every 2nd & 4th Thursday at 2:30pm there is a wonderful group of homeschoolers (ages 6-12) attending a book group meeting. It is a recreational reading group. It's a lot of fun, and we have a snack of fresh fruit afterwards. It is open to new homeschoolers every 2nd & 4th Thursday at 2:30pm.

Last year, we read the Judy Moody series, and the Wind Dancer series by Sibley Miller, the Magic Kitten/Magic Puppy series by Sue Bentley, and the Mercy Watson series by Kate DiCamillo.

Please feel free to bring in your favorite book to talk about even if its not our current selection. We love to hear about your favorite book at our book group meetings. Steve Voake has three books available in paperback, and his newest in hardcover. Many of the girls plan to read a winter theme book and their choice was Daisy Dawson and the Big Freeze, which has a low third grade reading levels.

February Selection are Steve Voake's Daisy Dawson books in paperback now $5.99 each.

We meet one evening each month, and we are set with the 2nd Friday of every month at the bookstore, Mockingbird Books. Currently, we are reading the classic TINTIN series by Herge. In honor of new movie featuring the following two books in the series, Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure, are the group's choice for February. We have pizza with pepperoni delivered at 7pm for the fine young men (ages 11-14). EVERYONE THINKS better on a full stomach, served with water, and sometimes a veggie tray. We discuss the book, there's No pop quiz, so no worries. You must attend to have input into the next month's selection. We pick local author currently living in NYC- Nick James's Sky Ship Academy-Pearl Wars (a steampunk paperback set in Seattle) and is the January selection. Just released in late October 2011.

The November selection was Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle series, book 4 - Inheritance is out in hardcover November 4, 2011. The first three books are available in paperback, Eragon, Eldest, and Brisingr.

Two months ago,the guys read the steampunk series by Scott Westerfeld. This series is being read by boys and girls alike. Book 3- Goliath, available September 20, 2011 in hardcover only.

In July, this group chose Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. ( winner of the Hugo and Nebula book awards for this book). Its the first book of a 10 book series. I recommend this age group to read only Ender's Game, followed by Ender's Shadow ( book 5) in this series and then wait 8-10 years to read the following books.

Last June's choice was the 10th and final book in the Ranger's Apprentice series, Emperor of Nihon-Ja by John Flanagan.

Pease choose any book from the above mentioned selections, or bring in your current favorite book. We are a very relaxed and book loving group. .

Adults who read Children's Literature-Feb.

every third Tuesday of the month at 7 pm at Mockingbird Books

We are a very friendly book group reading what we missed during our childhoods at the local library. Our past selections have been, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by B. Smith, Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, and John Steinbeck's King Arthur and His Noble Knights, and Jeanne Birdsall's The Penderwicks. You must attend to have input into the next month's selection. We hope to see you soon, and we would love to have new members. This past summer,we read the series by Virginia Euwer Wolff starting with Make Lemonade. She is a National Book Award winner with her second book in this series,True Believer, and finally the third book,This Full House. They are lovely quick books to read, too!

For June we read the Penderwicks series (3 books) by Jeanne Birdsall. These books take place during the summer months and make a wonderful family read aloud for everyone over 6 years old.

For July, we read Sherman Alexie's newly banned book, The Absolutely True Diary Story of a Part Time Indian. This National Book Award winner was recently banned by the Richland School Board in our state.

In August, we selected the newest biography about the creator of Charlotte"s Web, E. B. White, written by Michael Sims and published in June 2011 by Walker & Co. for $25.00:this bio is a keeper and a treasure to read.

The September selection was WONDERSTRUCK by Brian Selznick creator and author of The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Wonderstruck is my Holiday pick for everyone this year. Our November selection was the Book Thief written by Markus Zusak.

February selection is Breadcrumbs written by Anne Ursu. This book should win numerous awards this year, and it is the second series written by Ursu. Many young girls truly enjoy her Cronos Chronicles books now completed and available in paperback.
